Johnson Calls For Economic Transformation

Nicholas Johnson, Post and Telecommunications Assistant Minister for Technical Services, has voiced an urgent call for the country to utilized its natural resources and economy through technology.

In his address at the 2025 Technology Assembly held under the theme: “Transforming Governance, Empowering Citizens and Advancing Liberia’s Digital Future,” Mr. Johnson noted: “Technology is evidence-based economic growth and the need for significant investment in the sector.”

However, Johnson regretted that despite the country being endowed with vast natural resources, “it has yet to translate these riches into tangible economic growth.”

He drew comparisons to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, both of which, have faced challenges in leveraging their resources for national development.

Johnson highlighted the importance of tourism as a potential driver for attracting investors to the country. While the country boasts stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, the tourism sector has long been underdeveloped, hindered by inadequate infrastructure, security concerns, and a lack of strategic marketing.

The National Technology Assembly is the “first step” towards revolutionizing the country’s operational framework.

Johnson said, assurance that there have been “quite responses to letters” regarding this initiative is vague and does little to instill confidence in the public.

Moreover, while he encouraged young people to embrace technology as a means of transforming their lives, Johnson said, it is crucial to recognize the barriers that many Liberians face in accessing technology.
