The Engineering Department of Grand Kru Technical College joined the global community in commemorating World Engineering Day with a strong call for innovation, sustainability, and greater inclusion in the engineering profession.

The celebration was held under the theme: “Smart Engineering for Sustainable Future Through Innovation and Digitalization.”  The event brought together students, faculty members, administrators, and stakeholders to reflect on the vital role engineering plays in shaping Liberia’s development. Delivering the keynote address, John Wain Natt described 2026 as a pivotal year for moving “from dialogue to delivery” through meaningful and practical innovations.

He stressed that discussions about national development must now translate into tangible engineering solutions that address real challenges.

Mr. Natt emphasized the need for increased attention and support to the Engineering Department to adequately prepare future generations.

He highlighted critical global and local concerns, including climate change and resource preservation, noting that engineers are central to designing sustainable systems that will protect the environment and ensure long-term development.

“Engineering is not just a profession; it is a pathway to changing the world for the better,” Mr. Natt stated, encouraging both the present generation and those yet to come to view engineering as a transformative force.  He noted that meaningful progress will require collective involvement and collaboration. The keynote speaker also underscored the importance of diversity in the profession, urging more youth and women to pursue careers in engineering.

According to him, inclusive participation will foster creative and innovative solutions to Liberia’s many development challenges. He further called on students to see engineering as a powerful tool to transform Grand Kru County, the broader society, “Mama Liberia,” and the world at large. Meanwhile, stakeholders, including members of the college administration and student representatives, extended appreciation for the successful hosting of the program.

They described the event as timely and inspiring, reaffirming their commitment to supporting engineering education and innovation at Grand Kru Technical College.

World Engineering Day is observed annually to recognize the contributions of engineers toward sustainable development and technological advancement worldwide.
