Lawmakers on Capitol Hill in Monrovia have invited the Minister of Public Works to appear before plenary to provide an update on the Ministry’s plans and interventions for the maintenance of laterite roads during the rainy season.

The decision was reached during the House’s 9th day sitting of the 2nd session of the 3rd Quarter followed a communication River Gee County Electoral District #1 Representative, Alexander Poure, submitted.

Poure expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of major road corridors, particularly the route stretching from Nimba through Grand Gedeh to River Gee County.

In his communication to plenary, Rep. Poure informed his colleagues lawmakers that his attention had been drawn to the mechanisms and preparedness plans being implemented by the Ministry of Public Works to maintain laterite roads during the peak of the rainy season.

Poure recounted a recent trip to his constituency, during which he observed the worsening state of the road network.

The condition of the roads continues to deteriorate, creating significant challenges for commuters, commercial transport operators, and residents who rely on the corridors for the movement of people and goods.

Rep. Poure further said, recent photographs and videos circulating on social media platforms, particularly Facebook, appear to confirm the increasing difficulties motorists and residents experience as rainfall intensifies.

He observed that the Nimba–Grand Gedeh–River Gee corridor serves as a critical transportation link for Southeast and requires urgent attention to ensure accessibility and economic activity throughout the rainy season.

Plenary has meanwhile, agreed to invite the Minister of Public Works to provide a comprehensive briefing on the Ministry’s preparedness, ongoing road maintenance efforts, and plans to keep key transportation corridors passable during the rainy season.

Lawmakers said, the engagement will provide the Legislature with an opportunity to better understand the Ministry’s interventions and assess measures being undertaken to ensure safe and reliable transportation for citizens.

The Minister of Public Works is to respond to lawmakers’ concerns and outline government’s strategy for maintaining laterite roads nationwide.
