A one-day community consultative engagement held in Tiene Town, Grand Cape Mount County, brought together over 400 women across Tewor District.
The assembly led by District #3 Representative Gbessie Sonii Faikai was geared towards expanding women’s representation and inclusion in governance.
The gathering is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen female grassroots participation and increasing women’s presence at the national legislature to ensure their voices are reflected in decision-making processes.
The engagement was also introduced through an initiative supported by the IBSA Fund for Poverty and Hunger Alleviation aimed at promoting inclusive governance.
India, Brazil, and South Africa are the three countries that consist of the IBSA framework.
Rep. Faikai disclosed that the initiative will include skills training programs and financial support through grants to members of the women’s Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs).
It’s a program designed to enhance economic independence targeting poverty reduction and social inclusion at the community level to empower women.
The lawmaker further called for a broader national conversation on gender quotas and electoral reform, stressing that structural changes are necessary to increase women’s participation in leadership.
Meanwhile, the women expressed interest in the engagement and pledged support to the district representative for the initiative.
