For overwhelmingly winning the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) historical seat, former President George Weah has commended President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and his entire government.
“I extend heartfelt appreciation to the government, led by Pres. Boakai for ensuring that this monumental national aspiration came to a successful conclusion,” Weah told Boakai in a statement.
He also thanked ECOWAS, African Union (AU), and all local and international stakeholders, who supported Liberia from the onset, which followed through with a resounding 181 votes.
Weah recalled how his CDC-led government began the journey to the Non-Permanent seat at the UN with clear goal to claim the country’s rightful place on the world stage and advance global peace and security.
He said with the current diplomatic milestone giving the country, “it is a great opportunity for the nation and its people.”
“Liberia,” he said, “will now use the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to championing these ideals, while advocating tirelessly for developments.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Weah has called on all Liberians to use the landmark achievement to work in the collective interest of the country.
On Tuesday, June, 3, the country elected to a non-permanent seat on the UNSC for the 2026–2027 term, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s international reemergence.
Shortly afterwards, Pres. Boakai, hailed the achievement as “a new chapter in the country’s global engagement,” and a tribute to the resilience and global vision of the Liberian people.
“This is a moment of honor and humility for our 178-year-old republic,” Pres. Boakai said.
Adding: “Our election symbolizes African perseverance and celebrates generations of Liberians, who held firm to freedom, self-governance, and global solidarity.”
