We Concur With Liberia National Bar Association Alert Pending Supreme Court Opinion On Speakership Crisis

THE LIBERIA NATIONAL Bar Association (LNBA) through its President, Cllr. Borbor M. Varmah, recently forewarned members of the House of Representatives’ Minority and Majority Blocs, as well as their supporters, to act with maturity and in a manner that is consistent with democratic values and the rule of law.

THE NATIONAL BAR Association of Liberia also requested the general public to remain calm and peaceful as they await the considered opinion of the Supreme Court in the long-running speakership saga at the 55th House of Representatives.

IN THE WISDOM of the Bar, all threats, counter-threats and inflammatory statements from any side of the crisis are condemnable because such actions undermine public confidence in the judicial process and the country’s democracy.

BLUNTLY, THE BAR requested that the Judiciary be given the space to render its judgment free of pressure, intimidation and undue influence from any quarter; this caution is something we primly support to the letter.

IN A COUNTRY of law like ours, the Supreme Court as the highest arbiter of justice must be respected and its candid opinions adhered to in order to uphold the tenets of valued democracy.

UNFORTUNATELY, DILUTING POLITICS with the rule of law as we have seen in the ongoing speakership crisis at the House of Representatives; suggests another angle or neo-imperial presidency Liberians have suffered over the years of bad governance.

THOUGH PRESIDENT JOSEPH Nyuma Boakai, having seemingly been silent to publicly announce his intervention in the impasse, has reportedly called on the Supreme Court to halt its pending opinion until he intervenes in two weeks’ time, such belated stand, in our opinion has focused public eyes on the President about the way forward in this  long-running leadership crisis at the first branch of government.

TO THIS END, we concur with the Liberia National Bar Association alert pending the Supreme Court opinion on the speakership crisis at the 55th House of Representatives, hoping that the rule of law will surely prevail.
