War Victims’ Memorial Dedicated

The Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR), has officially dedicated a memorial site in Naama Town, Electoral District #4, Bong County.

The exercise is to honor nearly 100 locals, who were killed in the district during the civil war in 1994.

Constructed by the Commission, with funding from the government through the INCHR, the memorial stands as a solemn tribute to the victims of one of the town’s most tragic chapters.

George S. Kpaklian, who sorrowfully recounted the events, spoke of how warring factions massacred more than 90 people in September, 1994, Kpaklian described the incident as one of the darkest moments in Naama Town’s history.

During the official handover ceremony, INCHR Chairman, Dempster Brown, said, the project aligns with recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

 Brown underscored the the importance of justice and accountability.

He urged residents to support the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court to prosecute those responsible for wartime atrocities.

Brown also encouraged the inhabitants to protect and preserve the memorial

He said, its role is to educate future generations about the consequences of violence and conflict.

Bong County Superintendent, Hawa Loleyah Norris, commended INCHR for honoring the victims.

Madam Norris called on local authorities in Naama Town to maintain the site properly, and ensure that it remains clean and respectful for the victims.
