VP Koung Cautions Against Selling Land To Foreigners

Vice President Jeremiah K. Koung has cautioned local county officials against selling land to foreigners, adding that it is against the law of the country with respect to land ownership under the Liberia Land Authority. Speaking at the official launch of the National Orientation Conference for local Government Officials on August 5, 2024, in Ganta, Nimba County, the Liberian Vice President said land can or should only be given to foreigners under a lease agreement but not to be sold. The Liberian Vice President urged officials of the 15 political subdivisions of Liberia to buttress the Liberia Land Authority’s efforts in providing public awareness to citizens of the country regarding the sale of land. VP Koung expressed belief that with support from county authorities in the fight against the sale of land to foreigners, it will help safeguard the country’s land sector. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) ongoing orientation workshop is intended to empower members of the Local Government structures with the requisite knowledge to deliver on their respective duties and functions ascribed to them by the Local Government Act of 2018. The key objective of the orientation session is to increase understanding of the structures and contents of the Local Government Act of 2018 and other decentralization reforms including the revenue sharing Law of Liberia.
