Residents of Totota City, said they are dissatisfied with the questionable US$50,000 water tower project. They described the tower as ‘substandard, with a cost below the amount contractors claimed were used to finish the work.
The residents spoke through George Kollie, a community member.
The project was announced by Bong County Council during the 2024–2025 County Sitting.
The project was intended to provide safe drinking water for residents, “but the structure does not reflect the huge sum reportedly used to complete the construction,” Mr. Kollie.
He said the current state of the water tower raises concerns about accountability and transparency in the use of money intended for county’s development projects.
Kollie said the facility constructed in Totota appears far below standard as compared to the original design presented to residents.
He said the project location also poses threats to nearby residents, and should have therefore, undergone proper consultation before implementation.
He further said despite repeated concerns from residents and community leaders, the county council failed to provide clear explanations regarding how funds intended for the project were used.
Some of the residents, Kollie said, remain disappointed over ‘mismanagement, and lack of transparency.’
He maintained that the locals have meanwhile, demanded a full audit of the project.
They have also called on members of the county Legislative Caucus, and relevant authorities to ensure that the funds are properly accounted for, and used for their intended purpose.
Efforts to contact Bong County Council chairperson, Aaron Sackie-Fenlah, proved unsuccessful.
