UN Peacebuilding Commission Reaffirms Support To Peace Efforts

The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), has reaffirmed its commitment to support Liberia’s peacebuilding agenda.

The assurance follows the conclusion of a high-level visit UN officials to the country.

The Chair of the Liberia Configuration of the PBC, Ambassador Nicola Clase of Sweden, led the delegation.

Amb. Clase described Liberia as a global example of successful post-conflict recovery and peace consolidation.

Amb. Clase made the statement at the end of the visit.

The diplomat said, Liberia’s peacebuilding journey remains ongoing with a peace story that is still being written. She highlighted that the visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to engage a wide range of national stakeholders and assess the country’s progress in sustaining peace and democratic governance. Madam Clase said, Liberia has demonstrated significant resilience and commitment in maintaining peace, particularly through inclusive governance and national ownership of development initiatives.

During the visit, the delegation held high-level discussions with President

Joseph Nyuma Boakai, focusing on peacebuilding priorities and future cooperation with international partners.

The delegation also met with former presidents George Weah and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Their discussions were centered on strengthening democratic institutions and advancing transitional justice. Meanwhile, Am. Clase has extended an official invitation to Pres. Boakai to address the Peacebuilding Commission in New York on Liberia’s ongoing peacebuilding efforts.

The delegation commended Liberia for its peaceful conduct of the 2023 general elections and the smooth transfer of political power.

Members of the delegation described the historical event a major milestone in the country’s democratic progress. It further noted that Liberia’s election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term, reflects growing international confidence in the country’s governance and stability.

Throughout the visit, the delegation observed that Liberia has made meaningful strides in consolidating peace, while also identifying areas requiring sustained attention.
