UN Official Stresses Aviation’s Role By Amos Godgift Harris

The United Nations Resident Coordinator, Ms. Christine Umutoni, has emphasized the pivotal role of the aviation industry in driving Liberia’s sustainable development and advancing the agency Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UNDP Resident Representative in Liberia delivered the message on behalf of Ms. Umutoni’s on Monday, May 5, at the official launch of Aviation Awareness Week in Monrovia.

Dia described air transport as a vital enabler of economic growth, job creation, tourism and trade.

“Aviation connects Liberia to global markets and supports the movement of people and goods, making it a cornerstone for economic and social progress,” Mr. Dia said.

While celebrating the potential of the aviation sector, Dia also acknowledged ongoing challenges, including labor shortages and inadequate infrastructure.

He called for increased investment in sustainable aviation technologies and urged alignment with the country’s national development strategy; the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID).

He further encouraged Liberian authorities and stakeholders to shift the country’s aviation identity from merely a transit point to a vibrant destination hub.

“Transforming the country’s aviation sector into a destination hub is key to unlocking its full potential for inclusive growth,” he said.

Mr. Dia, meanwhile, reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Liberia’s journey toward inclusive and sustainable development.

He said the global body remains a strong partner in Liberia’s transformational agenda.
