UN, Gov’t Take UN Day Celebration To Zwedru

The United Nations Resident Coordinator, Madam Christine Umutoni has disclosed that the institution will this year celebrate the United Nations Day in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County. The UN Envoy revealed that the UN is working closely with the Ministry of Internal Affairs as part of its early preparation to take this year’s UN Day celebration to Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County. Speaking during a meeting at the One UN House on September 17, 2024 in Monrovia, UN Resident Coordinator Christine Umutoni said October 24 of each year is celebrated in Liberia because Liberia is a founding member of the UN, adding that the intended purpose of taking the day outside Monrovia for the first time is intended to promote the Government of Liberia’s decentralization process in taking major activities and services to the people. The UN Resident Coordinator told the gathering that ahead of October 24, the UN team is expected to pay an assessment visit as part of its activities working with MIA to mobilize CSOs, local dwellers including government civil servants to participate in promoting the sustainable development Goals. Also, Madam Umutoni revealed that the UN will launch a Joint UN Regional hub in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County as part of its effort to support the Government of Liberia’s decentralization agenda. She emphasized that the launch of the joint UN Regional hub will create access for local services. Meanwhile, Internal Affairs Deputy Minister for Research and Planning Edward K. Mulbah has assured the Government of Liberia’s commitment in working with the UN team to ensure that the program is well planned and fulfilled. “Government is excited and grateful. This activity reminds me of government principles and systems in local government activities” He said. Minister Mulbah said the UN Day celebration outside Monrovia for the first time is crucial to the Government of Liberia as part of its ongoing efforts to decentralize its activities across the nation. The MIA Deputy Minister said the Government of Liberia as one team stands ready to work together in ensuring that the program is successful, adding that celebrating UN Day as a government shows results in achieving the sustainable development goals. Speaking further on the expected launch of the joint UN Hub, Minister Mulbah said the hub is a front line facility that will provide ministerial services between government and the local.
