UL To Observe 75th Anniversary

The University of Liberia (UL), has officially announced series of activities leading to its ’75th Founder’s Day’ celebration, commencing on Sunday, February 15, 2026 in Monrovia.

The official theme of the anniversary is “From Our Foundation, To Our Future.”

The milestone celebration marks 75 years since Liberia College was rechartered as the University of Liberia in 1951, a transition that ushered the institution into a new era of expanded academic activities and national responsibility.

Founded in 1862, Liberia College was established as Liberia’s national institution of higher learning and remains the second-oldest higher education institution in Africa.

Its elevation to university status in 1951 significantly broadened its mandate, resulting in expanded curricula, increased faculty, enhanced professional training, growth in research, and a stronger contribution to national leadership development.

At a press conference Thursday, February 5, 2026, UL President, Dr. Layli Maparyan said, the institution stands as Liberia’s largest and most accessible public university, serving nearly 30,000 students from across the country’s diverse population.

Dr. Maparyan noted that despite enduring periods of national challenged and recovery, the university has remained resilient, an endurance widely regarded as a source of national pride.

She said the theme highlights both continuity and change, honoring UL’s historic roots while emphasizing relevance, reform, and institutional growth.

“The celebration is guided by the university’s leadership vision known as the Five Es; Education, Effectiveness, Efficiency, Excellence, and Ethics, which continue to shape UL’s strategic direction and transformation agenda.”

As part of the anniversary launch, the university has unveiled its official 75th Anniversary logo.

The logo was selected through a nationwide design competition organized by the UL Relations Office, which attracted more than 50 submissions.

The winning design was created by Mr. Jao Malata, and has been praised for symbolizing light, knowledge, service, transformation, and national pride, while reflecting the University of Liberia’s history and enduring legacy.
