Information Minister Jerolinmek Mathew Piah, has strongly defended President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s recent use of a private-owned flight to Lofa.
Piah meanwhile, labelled critics of Boakai for his choice of transportation as “trash talkers.”
His remarks come on the heels of public scrutiny regarding the President’s use of a small aircraft for the visit to his home county.
Mr. Piah clarified that the aircraft, a small red, white, and blue plane, is owned by Samaritan’s Purse; a reputable humanitarian organization that has actively operated in the country for many years.
Piah’s statement was made in response to allegations circulating on social media and among commentators suggesting that the plane was affiliated with Bea Mountain Mining Company.
“The plane is not owned by Bea Mountain Mining Company as some have erroneously claimed. It is vital to set the record straight and acknowledge the humanitarian efforts of Samaritan’s Purse in our country.”
Piah: “Pres Boakai’s decision to fly in the aircraft was made with the intention of efficiently serving the Liberian people.”
He said, the President took a significant risk by opting for the single-engine plane to reach Lofa, a region that is often challenging to pliable roads.
Piah argued that such actions demonstrate Boakai’s commitment to engage directly with citizens and address their concerns.
His defense comes at a time when public figures and political analysts have increasingly scrutinized the modes of transportation used by government officials.
Critics have raised concerns about transparency, and the implications of using private aircraft during official visits.
Piah’s remarks aim to quell the ongoing debate and reinforce the narrative that the President’s actions are driven by a dedication to public service rather than any ulterior motives.
He urged the public to focus on the positive impacts of the President’s engagements in the counties, rather than getting bogged down by “unfounded criticisms.”
As the political landscape in Liberia continues to evolve, the discourse surrounding Pres. Boakai’s actions and choices will likely remain a topic of interest among citizens and commentators alike.
