Ahead of Today’s senatorial by-election in Nimba County, the international partners on the election, has issued a joint statement reaffirming its commitment to support the country’s democratic journey.
Today’s senatorial by-election in which seven males are being challenged by a lone female contestant is a litmus test for the county to elect a Prince Y. Johnson (deceased) replacement (deceased).
The election, perceived as a two-horse race; (Edith Gongloe Weh vs Samuel G. Kogar) became necessary following the death of the county’s ranking Senator Johnson late last year.
Other contestants are Richard Matinoky Tingba, Garrison Yealue, B. Mark Gbliwon, Torbor Farngalo and Dr. George Gonpu.
Meanwhile, international community in a statement, said it remains committed to supporting the country’s democratic journey.
The statement added: “As Nimba heads to the by- election today, April 22, 2025, we encourage all stakeholders to abide by the terms of the Farmington River Declaration and all relevant laws to foster a credible, free, fair, inclusive and peaceful electoral process.”
Also, the international community commends the National Elections Commission, the Liberia National Police and all security agencies for the work done so far.
The statement then urged all institutions to remain impartial to build confidence in a credible and successful electoral process.
To this end, the international community urges all citizens to play their role in forging further democratic gains in the country.
In a related development, the leadership of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) has called on Nimbians to vote in accordance with the constitution, and to also actively participate in today’s voting process peacefully.
LNBA president Bornor M. Varmah, spoke of the country continues strengthening its democratic credentials, which he said is imperative to the that all eligible voters exercise their rights peacefully
responsibly and in a manner that upholds the rule of law.
