To Promote Sustainable Fisheries:

LAFA, NaFAA Host First-Ever Ocean Screening

The Liberia Artisanal Fishermen’s Association (LAFA), in collaboration with the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) and with support from Blue Ventures has hosted its first-ever ocean screening program in Monrovia.

Held under the theme, “Building Partnerships for Sustainable Oceans and Resilient Coastal Livelihoods,” the event marked Liberia’s debut screening of the documentary Ocean, narrated by renowned broadcaster David Attenborough.

The program brought together key stakeholders in the fisheries sector, including artisanal fishers, fish processors, students, youth groups, non-governmental organizations, and intergovernmental partners.

Participants traveled from nine fishing communities across Montserrado and Bomi counties, reflecting growing national interest in marine conservation and sustainable fishing practices.

Delivering the keynote address, NaFAA Director General, J. Cyrus Saygbe Sr., emphasized the importance of ocean conservation and responsible fisheries management.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting artisanal fishers and advancing policies aimed at protecting Liberia’s marine resources for future generations.

Also in attendance was European Union Ambassador to Liberia, Nona Deprez, representing the European Union Delegation to Liberia.

She highlighted the EU’s continued partnership with Liberia in strengthening ocean governance and improving the livelihoods of coastal communities. Organizers described the screening as a significant milestone for LAFA, noting that the initiative aims to raise awareness about ocean protection while fostering dialogue among fishers, policymakers, and development partners.

Participants praised LAFA and its partners for organizing what they termed a timely and inspiring event. They pledged to play an active role in protecting the ocean, acknowledging its vital importance to their livelihoods and the well-being of their families.

The event concluded with renewed calls for stronger collaboration to ensure sustainable ocean management and resilient coastal communities across Liberia.
