On the occasion marking the observance of World Tourism Day, the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres said tourism has a potential to transform communities by creating jobs, fostering inclusion and promoting local economies. In his remarks on the World Tourism Day celebration under the theme: “Tourism and Peace”, the UN Secretary General highlighted that the world should seize this moment to reflect on the profound connection between tourism and peace because he believes that tourism and peace have a close lineage in advancing the globe into a harmonious society. He added: “Sustainable tourism can transform communities – creating jobs, fostering inclusion and strengthening local economies”. By valuing and preserving cultural and natural heritage, Guterres noted that it can help reduce tensions and nurture peaceful coexistence, adding that tourism also promotes economic interdependence between neighbors, encouraging cooperation and peaceful development. At the same time, he disclosed that tourism broadens horizons and that every traveler can be an ambassador, engaging respectfully with local populations, recognizing our diversity and shared humanity, and the values that unite us all. “Let us travel responsibly, build bridges, and promote mutual respect among cultures and nations”, he emphasized. Together, according to him, people of the world can harness the power of tourism to advance peace and prosperity for all. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) established World Tourism Day in 1980, marking the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on September 27, 1970. This date was chosen to coincide with the end of the tourist season in the northern hemisphere and the start of the tourist season in the southern hemisphere, making it a globally significant period for tourism.
