Solar Flash Brings Hope To Barrobo Dwejah

By Aaron B. Nemah

Barrobo Dwejah, Karluway District, is buzzing with excitement after receiving 40 “free solar panels” from the ECOWAS IDA ROGEAP Program.

The US$18,750 donation aims to boost energy access and community development in the district.

The solar panels will provide reliable, renewable energy for homes, businesses, and services, fostering growth, improving healthcare, and enhancing education. Town elders, women, and youth are thrilled, saying: “the initiative will transform our community, and unlock new opportunities.”

The program provides grants ranging from US$10,000 to US$250,000 for off-grid solar projects, and has already supported initiatives in Nigeria, like electrifying 15 health centers and schools with a US$700,000 grant.

Liberia is also benefiting from similar initiatives, with a US$20 million investment in solar PV systems, and plans to add 70 megawatts of power through new solar projects.

The country has identified 30 rural communities for solar mini-grid development, focusing on areas far from the national grid.

Meanwhile, ECOWAS and partners have committed to drive sustainable development in the region through the “Light Up Southeast program,” focusing on off-grid and mini-grid solutions.

Barrobo Dwejah is set to shine brighter, and others are hoping to follow suit.
