Shaky Track

In less than two years of stewardship, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is coming under immense criticisms, both from opposition politicians and those who supported his presidential bid in 2023 to ascend to the nation’s highest seat. From the opposition standpoint, President Boakai’s appointments of government officials have been marred by gross nepotism, favoritism and lack of geographic balance. This is the trend critics became disgusted against past governments for, thus leading to calls for change of regime through the ballot box. The President has also been accused of deliberately undoing established reform measures which, when he was vice president under former president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf were legislated, approved and made laws of the Republic for enforcement to govern the country.  Tenured Positions Amongst reforms made by the Sirleaf’s administration, tenured positions which terms vary from one strategic public entity to another are said to be tampered with by the Boakai-led administration, by replacing officials whose tenures have not expired with Unity Party fanatics. References are being made to the Liberia Telecommunication Authority (LTA), Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), the Governance Commission (GC), amongst others that are still reportedly being hunted. The first branch of government whisk The Liberian Constitution says the National Legislature is the first branch of government, followed by the executive branch and the judiciary branch.  Close to the end of the end of the first year of Unity Party-led government, the House of Representatives locked down into leadership crises to remove Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. The tussle produced majority and minority blocs. Violence erupted and degenerated into the burning of portion of the Capitol building which investigation is still ongoing. Representative Richard Koon of Montserrado County, a steward of the governing Unity Party who ran against Grand Kru County Representative J. Fonati Koffa for the House Speakership during the onset became the preferred candidate of the majority bloc to win on white ballot at an election outside of the House’s Chamber to replace Koffa.   In response, the minority bloc has continued to resist and deny that Representative Koon is the legitimate Speaker of the House of Representatives thereby indicating that the House is still in a leadership crisis. As it stands, the Koon-led leadership reportedly decided to recall Liberia’s legislative representation at the ECOWAS Parliament, but the regional bloc turned down the recall request. At the onset of the House’s leadership crisis, inside sources at the Capitol Building claimed that President Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence was the next target for removal. The claim seems to be coming to light, even though the House’s crisis has not totally been settled.  However, Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe has been reported refuting the claim. At the third branch of government- the judiciary, Majority Bloc Speaker Koon has been quoted as advancing plan to impeach the Chief Justice, counting the judiciary’s failure to attend the recent SONA, an annual address where the president of the Republic appears to outline national progress report of the country to the citizenry. Security ambiguity In the film of national governance concerns, two forces of the country’s security sector- personnel of the Armed Forces of Liberia and the Liberia National police have displayed vengeance amounting to national insecurity. The February 23-26, 2025 brutal incidents at the SD Cooper Road Junction amongst AFL and LPN personnel seemed to have warranted weariness amongst the populace.  Dwindling    expectations and anxieties The euphoria of a new dawn of regime based on promises made to the governed during electioneering period appears to be drastically fading away as supporters of the current regime and critics have begun expressing very strong disappointment in the midst of reported corruption and other bad governance practices by those who crusaded to bring changes to better the lives of Liberians when they were in opposition. Presently in the country, the costs of essential commodities- rice and other goods including transportation fares are being decried, blaming the government for lacking control to contain the economic situation. However, the government has consistently noted that it is working out modalities to develop the country despite critics’ claims that the regime is doing nothing to improve the lives of the Liberian people.
