Sass-Town High School Beats Defending Champions

Sass-Town High School football team has emerged victorious (2025 Grand Kru County High School Championship) after beating the defending champions, P. Wolloh High School with a nail-biting score of 1-0.

The match was part of a two-day national tournament held on July 16-17 held in Barclayville, Grand Kru County. The sporting events in all 15 counties were organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The tournament kicked off with Sass-Town showing impressive form, having defeated Barclayville Central High School with a commanding score of 3-0. This was on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at the open sport pitch of Barclayville City.

Sass Town boys’ strong performance set the stage for a showdown with P. Wolloh, a team renowned for its prowess.

The pressure was the exhibition of physiques as both teams battled for control, but it was Sass-Town’s determination and strategic gameplay that ultimately led to their narrow victory.

In addition to the excitement of the football matches, the kickball of P. Wolloh High School team also made headlines, clinching their own impressive victory.

Meanwhile, they were awarded a cash prize of L$25,000, celebrating not only their skill, but the spirit of competition that defined the tournament.

Both Sass-Town and P. Wolloh showcased the remarkable talents present in the country’s youth sports, underscoring the importance of such tournaments in fostering teamwork, resilience and the country pride.

The national tournament is a pivotal platform for young athletes to demonstrate their abilities and aspire to greater heights in their sports careers.

For now, Sass-Town High School revels in their well-deserved victory in the next stage of the national tournament, while P. Wolloh High School kickball team, prepares their next steps toward reclaiming the title.

The national school’s tournament organized by the Ministry of Youth Sports is truly characterized by the power of sports to unite communities and inspire youth.

However, the 2025 Grand Kru County High School Championship held in Barclayville, is an integral component (primary phase) of a three-stage tournament across the country: County High School Championship, Regional Championship, and National Championship. 

Four high schools, including the P.G. Wolloh High School (2017 runner-up), Buah Central High School, Sass-Town High School and the Barclayville Central High School in Grand Kru County participated in the two-day tournament from 16 – 17 July, 2025.

The winners (kickball and football) of the Grand Kru County High School Championship did not only receive cash prizes, but also advance to the 2nd stage of the tournament (Regional Championship), which is expected to be held in Greenville, Sinoe County.

Accordingly, Grand Kru County High School champion teams will travel to Greenville at no cost to the winning schools.

Region 4: River Cess, Sinoe, Grand Kru

Region 5: Maryland, River Gee, Grand Gedeh.

The National High School Sports organizer bears the cost of transportation, feeding, and accommodation. In Greenville, the school winning the Regional Championship will advance to the final stage of the tournament – National Championship- in Montserrado County.
