Sinoe County Senator Crayton O. Duncan has expressed concerns regarding the stark economic disparities in Liberia—a nation rich in natural resources yet burdened by poverty.
In his remarks as he received honor as the Outspoken Lawmaker of the Year 2025 by Radio Margibi at the occasion marking the institution 2nd Home Coming ceremony in Kakata over the weekend, Duncan stressed the urgent need for policy reforms to address the socio-economic challenges facing the country.
“Liberia is a rich country with abundant resources, but the reality is that many of our people live in dire poverty,” Duncan stated. “It is unacceptable that while we possess vast natural wealth, our citizens struggle to meet their basic needs,” Senator Duncan noted.
He highlighted the nation’s wealth in minerals, timber, and agricultural potential, arguing that these resources should be harnessed to improve the living conditions of ordinary Liberians.
Duncan criticized the current governance structures for failing to ensure that the benefits of these resources reach the grassroots level. The senator called for the revisit of the minireals laws which will enable Liberians to benefit from its natural resources as a critical steps towards alleviating poverty.
He stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in managing the country’s wealth, urging officials to prioritize the welfare of the people. “Investing in our people is investing in our future. We must work together to create an economy that serves everyone, not just a select few,” Duncan added.
His statement seems to resonate with many citizens who have long felt the impacts of economic inequality.
The Senator’s remarks appears to have sparked discussions across the country about the necessity for inclusive economic policies that prioritize the welfare of all Liberians.
