“Return To House Chamber, Follow Due Process” – Supreme Court Orders Anti-Koffa Lawmakers

As tensions continue to rise at Capitol Hill in the ongoing dispute, both sides have just concluded a court conference with Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay.

On one side was  Speaker Fonati Koffa bloc, represented by former Associate Justice Kabineh Ja’neh and Cllr. Cyrenius Cephas. On the other side was the Majority bloc, represented by former Senator Varney Sherman.

During the conference, the Speaker’s legal team highlighted the procedural shortcomings of the Majority lawmakers’ attempts to oust the Speaker without due process.

Associate Justice Gbeisay questioned Cllr. Sherman, who represented the Majority bloc, about any formal complaint lodged with the Speaker prior to the removal attempt. Despite Sherman’s assertions that the Speaker’s rights were not violated, the Speaker’s legal team strongly refuted this claim.

Justice Gbeisay emphasized the importance of due process and urged the Majority bloc to follow the proper legal framework in the main chamber.

In response, Cllr. Sherman agreed to comply with this directive. With the impasse yet to be resolved, tensions remain high at Capitol Hill. It is uncertain whether the next session will be held in the main or joint chambers as Representative Samuel Kogar, the leader of the Majority bloc, indicated. The future remains to be seen as this dispute continues to develop.
