Nimba County district #5 Representative, Kortor S. Kwagrue, has communicated to the plenary of the House of Representative, seeking permission to invite both the Minister of Public Works and the Management of the Liberia Electricity Cooperation; especially the Emergency Power Project to provide reasons behind constant absence of street lights and bad road condition in major cities across Nimba County.
In his communications, Rep. Kwagrue said the issue of lack of street light in major cities within Nimba county is a matter of grave concern, noting that it borders around security, safety and overall, the welfare of residents.
He said even though the LEC though the EPP has ensured a stable supply of electricity to major cities, there still remains a serious challenge, including the complete absence of public street lights along the principal streets of Nimba County.
“The challenge is not just an inconvenience but it presents a direct threat to public order and development where the lack of streetlight has resulted into increased insecurity, high accident ricks, suppressed economic activities, among others,” he said.
With the issue of Public Works appearance, Rep. Kwagrue said bad road condition is another grave concern that affects the people of Nimba greatly and needs to be looked at critically.
He said the persistent absence of road infrastructure across Nimba continues to pose serious challenges to the daily lives and economic wellbeing of the people.
Rep. Kwagrue also told the gathering that his district alone has over 45,000 residents and also host one of Nimba County breadbasket and one of the highest contributors to the national budget in terms of coco production, but the residents still face bad road condition, which he said started as far back since the presidency of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf up to now.
It is upon this backdrop he wants the appearance of both authorities of Public Works and LEC along with EPP to provide update to upcoming plans to mitigate the situation.
Meanwhile, the Management of LEC was cited to appear on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 before full plenary while Public Works was mandated to appear before the Public Works and Ways Means ad Finance Committee to report in two weeks.
