Rep. Debee Wants Justice Minister Summoned …. For Alleged Abandoned Prison Facility in Grand Gedeh

Grand Gedeh county Electoral District three Representative Jacob Debee, II has written House plenary requesting the appearance of Minister of Justice, Cllr. J.  Oswald Tweh over what he referred to as the abandonment and the lying in ruins of the Palace of Correction in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County. The Grand Gedeh lawmaker said in his communication that the physical condition of the national palace of correct in the County is in a deplorable state, thereby not meeting the essence for which it was constructed many years back. According to him, the fence of the palace is broken, the rehabilitation center is unroofed, and the two standby generators have not been operational for years. He further indicated that there is no sufficient food for inmates, no skill training facilitates, and the assigned PSU Police officers do not have a place to sleep. Rep. Debee also told his colleagues Tuesday, 16 July in plenary that it has been observed that the operation vehicles used by the PSU police officers of the palace of correction are all broken down making it difficult to carry out effective operations and responsibilities as per their mandate. He is worried that keeping high core convicted criminals in such prison is dangerous for citizens of the county as they can break jail anytime and harm citizens of the area. The lawmaker is equally concerned about the wellbeing of the convicts, whom he said also have rights to be rehabilitated while undergoing corrections. Following the reading of his communication and debate, Montserrado County Electoral District 4 Representative Atty. Michael Thomas proffered a motion forwarding the communication to the Judiciary Committee to probe the matter and report to plenary in three weeks.
