The Chairperson of the Women’s Legislative Caucus, Representative Ellen A. Attoh-Wreh, has welcomed the submission of an Act to Ban Harmful Cultural Practices.
The Bill was recently submitted to the legislature by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for enactment.
Madam Attoh-Wreh described the introduction of the Bill as a “timely and progressive step toward safeguarding the rights, dignity, and well-being of women, children, and other vulnerable groups.”
She spoke of the harmful traditional practices, which she said, continue to pose significant health, social, and psychological risks.
She added: “Therefore, the Act require unified legislative action to ensure long-term protection for all.”
Madam Attoh-Wreh further encouraged her female colleagues as well as all lawmakers, to demonstrate strong support for the passage of the Bill
She noted: “The enactment of the Bill is in the best interest of the nation, and align with the national and international commitments to promote human rights and gender equality.”
“The future and safety of our women and children must always be prioritized. This proposed legislation represents a step to ensure that no harmful cultural practice undermines their rights or hinders their full participation in society.” Rep. Attoh said.
The Women’s Legislative Caucus then reaffirmed its commitment to advance reformative policies that protect women and children, and foster a safer and more inclusive country.
