Following a family member of slain President Samuel K. Doe rejection of ‘sympathetic gifts’ from former President George Weah on grounds that the gift was ‘hypocrisy.’
Sources within the Doe family lately informed this newspaper that the Doe family, mainly the daughter, have returned the gifts, which Mr. Weah donated during his courtesy visit on June 8, 2025, to the bereaved family of former President Doe.
During his visit, it was reported that Mr. Weah refused a handshake with Mame Doe.
Traditionalists believe, the act of rejecting ‘sympathetic gifts’ is tantamount to bewishing death on the person, who have presented the gifts.
However, Weah’s package, intended as a token of ‘sympathy’ following the passing of former First Lady Nancy B. Doe, included US$5,000 in cash, 50 bags of 25kgs rice, valued at US$1,000, and a promise of two cows, along with an expression of natural love.
The unexpected move to reject the offering stirred speculations, raising questions about underlying tensions or concerns surrounding the gesture.
But n twist of thing, former Pres. Weah’s condolence package to Nancy Doe’s family initially rejected, was later interestingly returned, but it was again (for the third time) rejected.
Mr. Weah’s condolence package was initially rejected, but has since been returned and dramatically rejected.
Former Ambassador Isaac Nyenabo, explanation that the initial rejection resulted from a misunderstanding among family members, which has now been ‘resolved’ is yet to unfold as this newspaper went to bed about 10 p.m.
