PUL Wants ‘Aggressive’ Oversight For Energy Sector

Press Union of Liberia (PUL) President, Julius Kanubah, has challenged journalists and media institutions to intensify scrutiny and reporting on the energy sector.

Kanubah described electricity access as a national concern that demands sustained media attention and public accountability.

He spoke on Thursday, May 21, at a one-day training on “Tracking the Implementation of Liberia’s Electricity Regulatory Framework.”

The event was held resort in Sinkor, Monrovia.

Mr.  Kanubah said, the media has a central role in ensuring transparency and public awareness in the electricity sector.

He said, the country’s energy sector directly affects the daily survival and economic sustainability of Liberians.

Therefore, Kanubah warned that poor reporting and limited public information could undermine efforts to improve electricity access.

He described the LERC as one of the most important public institutions, noting that its decisions have major implications for the affordability, accessibility, and availability of electricity.

“The work of the Commission cannot be effectively carried out without strong public engagement and information dissemination.”

Kanubah believes that the media can aggressively champion through continuous reporting and investigative journalism.

He praised the LERC for organizing the training, but said, the responsibility of journalists should go beyond covering workshops and official statements.

He urged reporters to critically investigate issues surrounding energy regulation, service delivery, pricing, and the management of the sector.

The event brought together journalists and communication professionals, who examined the electricity regulatory framework and increased media understanding of the operations and policy direction of the energy sector.
