The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has welcomed the public apology issued by House Speaker Richard Koon.

Koon’s apology followed his recent threat to “grab and jail” journalists; a remark that sparked criticisms from media practitioners and press freedom advocates.

Speaker Koon offered the apology on Thursday, November 27, 2025, during a plenary session of the House.

He expressed regret over the comment, and clarified that it was made “jokingly, and not intended to intimidate members of the fourth estate.”

In an effort to ease tensions, Koon later held a meeting with PUL leaders, and the Legislative Press Pool (LEGISPOOL).

During the discussion, Koon reaffirmed his commitment to protect press freedom, and maintain a healthy working relationship with journalists assigned to the Legislature.

PUL President Julius Kanubah, welcomed the Speaker’s apology, but said the seriousness of remarks that threaten the media should not be taken lightly.

Kanubah said such statements can undermine journalists’ safety and the country democratic culture.

He urged continued dialogue and mutual respect between the Speaker’s office and the press corps.

LEGISPOOL President Emmanuel Kollie, also encouraged Koon to foster a more open and professional relationship with reporters covering the Legislature.

Kollie spoke of need for transparency and free media engagement, which he said, are essential to democratic governance.

The meeting was also attended by LEGISPOOL Secretary General Gibson Gee, Media Adviser to the Speaker Vehzelee Sumo, and Director of the House Press Bureau Robert Haynes.

Meanwhile, the PUL has reminded all public officials of their responsibility to ensure the protection and safety of journalists in any part of the country.

The Union also called on media practitioners to maintain high ethical standards, and remain committed to report in the public interest.
