Pronoken Cutlass Incident Raises Concerns

A painful incident involving two minors in Pronoken has renewed concerns about child safety and supervision in rural communities across Grand Kru County.

The incident left a 9-year-old boy, identified as CJ, with a severe foot injury after he was accidentally struck with a cutlass by 13-year-old Jayce Boye on Saturday afternoon in Electoral District #1.

According to reports from the community, the incident happened around 1:00 PM in the yard of their residence while the older child was handling the farming tool. Witnesses said Jayce had warned the younger child to stay away, but CJ unexpectedly returned at the moment the cutlass was still raised, resulting in the injury.

While residents have largely described the matter as accidental, the incident has exposed the dangers children face in environments where sharp tools are often left within reach or used without adult supervision.

The Child Welfare and Protection Forum of Liberia (CWFL) in Pronoken responded immediately and rushed the injured child to a nearby clinic for treatment. Community sources said medical attention was provided quickly, though authorities have yet to release detailed information regarding the extent of the injury.

Parents and local leaders have now called for stronger awareness around household safety practices, particularly in communities where cutlasses and other farming tools are regularly used by minors.

Some residents believe the incident should push both families and community organizations to increase education on child protection and accident prevention.

Meanwhile, the 13-year-old involved in the incident was reportedly overwhelmed afterward, with witnesses describing him as emotional and deeply remorseful over the unfortunate occurrence.

The incident continues to generate discussions throughout the area, with many residents emphasizing that greater supervision and safety precautions could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
