Police Query Safety Practices

Police assigned in Grand Kru County are said to have launched inquiries into safety condition at an informal mining site in Chemgbete Bolloh Statutory District.

This followed a serious machine-related accident that left a worker critically injured.

The incident was reported to police at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2026, by Promise Amanoi, a 25-year-old Ghanaian national and resident of Chemgbete.

Madam Amanoi is engaged in mining activities along the Dorbor River.

The injured worker, Alphaso Grugbaye, 51, a Liberian national, and a resident of Doeswen, sustained severe wound to his right hand, while he was working near a mining machine.

His hand was reportedly amputated by the engine of the equipment during operations in the Chemgbete bush.

Following the report, police officers proceeded to the Buah Health Center, where the victim had been taken for emergency treatment.

Medical personnel confirmed that Grugbaye was in critical condition ever since he was admitted.

Nurses Anna Yoko and Dweady B. Nyentee, provided initial medical care before referring the victim to Fish Town Hospital for advanced treatment due to the seriousness of the injury.

Police authorities say the incident has raised concerns about occupational safety measures at local mining sites, particularly in remote areas.

Investigations are ongoing to determine whether negligence or unsafe practices contributed to the accident.
