Security concerns heightened in Chengbetee Town, Bolloh District on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after an arson attack destroyed a privately- owned shop during a protest that briefly disrupted peace in the community. The incident, which occurred around 8:00am., involved a group of women believed to have come from various towns in Upper Bolloh District.

The women reportedly marched through the streets of Chengbetee Town before setting fire to a shop owned by Mr. Bobby Kerslah, a 41-year-old businessman of the Mano tribe from Nimba County. Residents said the protest quickly escalated as the group demanded that law enforcement officers surrender Mr. Kerslah to them to face traditional authorities.

Tensions further rose when threats were allegedly directed at police personnel, including the Buah District Police Commander, Inspector Darpoe G. Karweah.

Police authorities confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving information from the community. Upon arrival, officers conducted an initial assessment, documented the scene with photographs, and took steps to restore calm.

The Liberia National Police has since launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, focusing on identifying individuals connected to the destruction of property and the intimidation of law enforcement officers. In response to the incident, police authorities condemned the use of mob action and emphasized the importance of resolving grievances through legal and peaceful means.

They warned that acts of violence, intimidation, and property destruction undermine public safety and the rule of law.

To prevent further unrest, police said security presence in Chengbetee Town and surrounding communities has been reinforced.

Residents have also been urged to remain calm and cooperate with investigators as the probe continues.

No injuries were reported during the incident; however, the shop was completely destroyed by fire.

Investigations into the motive behind the protest and the circumstances leading to the arson remain ongoing.
