The office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia (OWECC-L) and the People United For Peace In Liberia (PUFPIL), have signed an memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote peace and raise robust awareness on issues surrounding transitional justice across the country.
The signing ceremony marked the seventh by the OWECC-L since it was established.
The move demonstrates the trust and confidence partners and civil society groups have in the workings of the OWECC-L.
At the signing ceremony, OWECC-L executive director Cllr. Jallah Barbu said, the office remains resolute as part of its mandate to ensure that the courts are established in the country.
Cllr. Barbu, meanwhile assured the PUFPIL that OWECC-L is fully committed to the collaboration, which is to promote peace and bring final closure to the country’s bitter past.
He thanked the PUFPIL for reposing confidence in the OWECC-L for said collaboration in the Supreme interests of the nation and its people.
Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Cllr. Jedi Armah, buttressed Barbu’s statement when he pledged government’s unwavering support to the workings of the OWECC-L.
The government, Jedi said, “is seriously concerned with sustaining the country’s peace as well as working to ensure that the vices that led to the civil crisis are finally brought to an end through the OWECC-L.”
As part of the MoU, the two parties agreed to undertake collaborative protection, advocacy and promotional activities, leading to the drafting of the statute of the OWECC-L and the national anti-corruption court.
The parties agreed to further engage in resource-sharing, with individual support based on needs and competencies to complete specific tasks.
The head of the PUFPIL, Reverend Adolphus Capehart, signed for his organization. He commended OWECC-L for the work since President Joseph Nyuma Boakai established the court.
Capehart described the collaboration as “timely, and will go a long way in preaching the messages of peace across the country as well as bringing an end to the country’s ugly past.”
PUFPIL is a non for profit, non-governmental organization into developmental programs for preventing and finding solutions to peace through problem identification, mediation, outreach, community engagements, humanitarian assistance and gender responsiveness.
