OWECC-L Launches Nationwide Campaign

In the wake of challenges facing the office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia (OWECC-L), the staff continue to work in rolling out the court’s activities to meet up with its mandate.

The office under the leadership of Jallah Barbu, Executive Director, as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure that the courts are established officially, launched its national outreach campaign nationwide.

Dr. Barbu is a lawyer by profession.

Graced by partners, international community, representatives from civil society organizations, the outreach, aimed at fostering public understanding and engagement regarding the country’s transitional justice processes.

Under the theme” “Justice and Healing for All, Join us on the Road to Justice,” Dr. Barbu assured the gathering of staffs commitment to the process.

He pledged his office unwavering support to reach out to towns, villages, clans, local and urban communities, nationwide spreading the messages about transitional justice as well as the significance for the establishment of the courts in the country.

“We will roll out our sleeves to reach out as much as possible to engage our people and inform them of this national process,” Dr. Barbu assured the public.

He told the gathering that the entire process is a national-driven one, as such, it requires robust consultations to ensure every corner of the nation is touched.

The Chairman of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights, Dempster Brown, re-echoed the need for the significance of the court establishment to close the culture of impunity and fight corruption holistically.

Brown, also a lawyer by profession, called for more support, collaboration and protection from officials at OWECC-L to ensure that they achieve their mandate to the core.

The Head of the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Christian Mukosa, reaffirmed his office support and cooperation to the work of the OWECC-L.

According to him, the launched marked a critical step towards a long but achievable journey ahead of the court’s establishment.

For and on behalf of the resident coordinator of the United Nations, Christine Umutoni, hailed the OWECC-L for the official launch of its National Outreach Campaign.

She encouraged the staffs to ensure that the messaging be well coordinated and synchronized to avoid misinformation and disinformation in the public.
