Subject: Ongoing Illegal Demolitions and Violations of Citizens’ Rights in the Catholic Community, Oldest Congo Town
We, the residents of the Catholic Community in Oldest Congo Town, Montserrado County, write with deep anguish and unwavering resolve to bring to your attention the continued illegal demolition of our homes and violation of our rights by Mr. Stanton V. Gaye and his associates, despite clear rulings from the Supreme Court of Liberia and a Caveat issued by the Probate Court.
In August 2024, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of our community in a case against the intestate of the late Joseph V. Gaye, represented by Mr. Stanton V. Gaye. The ruling affirmed that the land in question had long been sold and that Mr. Gaye had no legal claim to it. This was further reinforced by a September 2024 Caveat from the Probate Court, warning all parties against doing business with Mr. Gaye or his associates regarding this land.
Despite these rulings, on September 27, 2025, Mr. Gaye—backed by SP Construction Company and a heavily armed contingent of Liberia National Police and sheriffs—sent bulldozers to demolish homes in our community. Citizens were assaulted, teargassed, and left homeless. The presence of the PSU and the scale of destruction suggest complicity at the highest levels.
We are alarmed by reports that Mr. Gaye is being empowered by his alleged ties to newly appointed officials in the Civil Law Court and the Supreme Court. This undermines the rule of law and emboldens land criminals who terrorize peaceful communities.
We demand:
- Immediate cessation of all demolition activities in the Catholic Community.
- Arrest and prosecution of Mr. Stanton V. Gaye and all collaborators involved in the illegal demolitions.
- Enforcement of the Supreme Court ruling and the Probate Court Caveat.
- Investigation into judicial and police complicity in these violations.
- Protection and restitution for affected families.
We call on the President, Vice President, Chief Justice, and all relevant authorities to uphold justice and protect the rights of Liberian citizens. We also appeal to international human rights bodies to monitor and intervene in this grave situation.
Signed:
Concerned Residents of the Catholic Community, Oldest Congo Town
