On Duport Road Fire Incident:

House Cites

“The trio are to detail findings of the recent fire outbreak on Duport Road, or else, rumors would intensify tensions and confusion in the Community,”

-Thomas’ Communication.

The House of Representatives has summoned authorities at the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS), the Liberia National Police (LNP), and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).

The trio are to appear before Plenary on Tuesday, December 9, 202, to provide a comprehensive update on the “tragic fire incident” that claimed five lives in the Duport Road Shara Community.

Plenary’s decision comes in response to a communication from Montserrado County Electoral District #4 Representative, Michael Thomas.

Thomas’ communication drew attention to the devastating November 14, 2025, fire in the Shara Community.

The incident resulted in the death of community chairlady Mrs. Deiode Garnette, her children Ms. Judee Garnette and Isaac Garnette, and two grandchildren, Christopher Freeman and Ruth Fleming. May their souls rest in peace.

Thomas added: “Although, the LNFS, LNP, and LEC swiftly responded to the scene, and initiated investigations into the cause of the fire, none of the institutions have released an official report to the public.”

This, he said, has fueled ongoing speculation and conflicting accounts surrounding the tragic loss of lives.

There are public perceptions that the victims did not died from fire, or else, their remains would have charred, instead, that was not the case.

“As the representative of the district where this heartbreaking incident occurred, I have taken a vested interest in ensuring that our constituents receive clarity. The absence of official findings has intensified tensions and confusion within the community.”

In his communication, Thomas appealed to the House to invite the three institutions to present their investigation findings to Plenary.

By doing so, he believes it would address public concerns and dispel misinformation about the incident.

Given the gravity of the matter, Plenary has agreed and formally summoned the LNFS, LNP, and LEC to appear on Tuesday to provide official reports, as part of the House’s oversight responsibility to safeguard the welfare of the Liberian people.

In a related development, House’s Committee on Concessions Compliance Review, has summoned China Union, Labor, Mines and Energy Ministry along with the Chief Executive Officer of China Union, to appear before the Committee on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

The Committee on Concessions Compliance Review is chaired by Representative Foday E. Fahnbulleh.

The Committee is requesting the entities to present a comprehensive matrix detailing: All Chinese nationals authorized by the Ministry of Labor to work with China Union, and its listed contracting companies; the specific positions occupied by these employees; any additional information relevant to the Committee ongoing review of the company compliance with its Mineral Development Agreement (MDA).

Fahnbulleh underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in concession operations, particularly concerning community welfare.
