Ombudsman Office Evicted

The Monrovia City Court has ordered the eviction of the Ombudsman Office for its “persistent refusal to pay rental fees, and failure to vacate property owned by Andrew N. Massaquoi.”

The lease agreement, signed in October 2025, expired and was automatically renewed on same terms and conduction, “because the Ombudsman continue possession of the premise, but was illegally terminated by the General Services Agency (GSA) on December 12, 2025.”

Under Liberian law, a lease agreement, a release said, may be deemed renewed if a tenant fails to surrender the property upon expiration.

“Because the GSA/Ombudsman failed to pay rent, the court issued a Writ of Possession, granting Mr. Massaquoi legal authority to reclaim his property.”

On Tuesday, Mr. Massaquoi told reporters that the Ombudsman Office has occupied his building without paying rent since October 29, 2025. He said, despite repeated efforts, including letters, phone calls, and in-person meetings with the GSA and Ombudsman leadership, “the Office has refused to honor its financial obligations.”

Mr. Massaquoi said, an institution meant to uphold integrity is instead violating citizens’ rights.

He added that the Ombudsman’s actions have caused him financial losses, stress, and damage to his property.

He appealed to the government and civil society organizations to intervene so he can receive his rightful rental payments.

In recent months, the Ombudsman Office has faced mounting controversies, including allegations of corruption, misuse of government funds, and internal conflicts.

During a radio interview on Prime FM (105.5), former Chairperson Finley Y. Karngar, revealed how he resigned because he was undermined by fellow commissioner.

He cited a toxic work environment, false propaganda against him, and hostility after he refused to approve personal demands outside of government budgetary allocations.
