NPA Celebrates Largest Vessel Arrival

The National Port Authority (NPA) has recorded a landmark achievement in the maritime sector with the successful berthing of the largest container vessel ever to dock at the Freeport of Monrovia.  The arrival of the CMA CGM Springs, carrying approximately 43,000 metric tons of cargo, and nearly 3,000 containers, signals growing confidence in port infrastructure and operational capacity. The vessel, measuring about 238.7 meters in length, was efficiently discharged within just two days, achieving an impressive average of nearly 60 container moves per hour. Port officials described the operation as one of the “fastest and most successful turnaround performances” ever recorded for a vessel of such size in the country.

Management underscored the increasing efficiency of port operations.

While on a guided tour of the vessel over the weekend in Monrovia, NPA Managing Director, Sekou A.M. Dukuly, hailed the accomplishment as a testament to the dedication, professionalism, and technical expertise of the port workers.

Dukuly, particularly praised the Liberian marine pilot, who skillfully guided the massive vessel into the harbor. He described the feat as a proud moment for the country’s maritime industry.

“The successful handling of the CMA CGM Springs demonstrates Liberia’s growing ability to accommodate larger international vessels that previously faced operational challenges when accessing the nation’s principal seaport.”

Dukuly said, the achievement reflects ongoing modernization efforts to strengthen service delivery and enhance the competitiveness of the Freeport of Monrovia.

He disclosed that container traffic at the Freeport has experienced remarkable growth in recent years.  Dukuly revealed how container trade volumes have increased from approximately 24 percent in 2024, to more than 40 percent in early 2026, reflecting increased commercial activity and positive economic momentum. He attributed the progress to strategic reforms the NPA implemented to improve efficiency, attract investment, and position Liberia as a key maritime gateway within the West African region.  The occasion was witnessed by French Ambassador to Liberia, Madame Isabelle Le Guellec, Transport Minister, Sirleaf Ralph Tyler, and representatives of APM Terminals Liberia and CMA CGM.

Their participation reflected the growing international confidence in Liberia’s maritime sector, and reinforced the NPA’s vision to transform the Freeport of Monrovia into a leading trade and logistics hub in West Africa.
