Nimba Caucus Disagrees With Elders

Following reports of recent endorsement for the extension of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s investment and ratification of its third Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) by traditional chiefs, elders and citizens from Yarmein, the County Legislative Caucus has criticized such decision.

It believes that such a decision for the extension and ratification of the company’s operations will be a holistic one, and not from a selected few section of the county.

Representative Nyahn Garsay Flomo, who read the Causes’ statement, categorically denied the Caucus sanctioning or receiving any official communication validating such a petition.

Flomo represents the county electoral district #2 and secretary of the county Legislative Caucus.

However, he said the Caucus remains deeply committed to ensuring that decisions affecting the county’s resources and future are made in an open, transparent and participatory manner.

“The Caucus will not accept or recognize any petition regarding AML Agreement unless it is authenticated through a broad-based county-wide consultation that will include all stakeholders, Rep. Flomo said.

According to the policymaker, “the county legislators are uncomfortable with an endorsement or any endorsement derived at as the result of inducement and cohesion of the locals.”

“We will ensure that due process is followed before making any determination,” Flomo declared.

The Nimba County Legislative Caucus reassures all residents that it remains steadfast in advocating for the best interest of the county.

Recently, traditional chiefs, elders and residents from Yarmien, Sehye and Zor communities in declared their support for the extension of ArcelorMittal-Liberia’s investment and the ratification of its third mineral development agreement (MDA).

In a statement issued in Sanniquellie on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, the citizens acknowledged the company’s contributions to employment, infrastructure and social services while urging the government to secure additional benefits for impacted communities in the new MDA.

Among their key demands were increments in social development fund, improved resettlement packages, local employment quotas, expanded vocational training and stronger environmental protections.

They also called for ArcelorMittal to support health, education and Community-driven projects, ensuring the company’s presence continues to benefit Nimbaians.

The chiefs then urged the government to finalize negotiations while incorporating their recommendations, emphasizing the need for a peaceful and cooperative partnership. LINA
