NEC Hails ECOWAS, UN Women

The outgoing chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), has praised the contributions of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and UN Women to democratic progress.

Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, described both institutions as ‘trusted and dependable partners.’

She spoke at a farewell program honoring the outgoing ECOWAS Resident Representative to Liberia, and the outgoing UN Women Country Representative.

Madam Lansanah said, their respective tenures coincided with critical electoral and governance milestones.

She spoke of how the country’s electoral process benefited immensely from sustained international collaboration, particularly in areas of technical support, capacity building, and the promotion of inclusive participation.

ECOWAS, Madam Lansanah said, played a pivotal role in strengthening electoral transparency and regional cooperation, while UN Women’s intervened significantly and advanced gender inclusion and women participation in politics and decision-making.

She further highlighted that the partnership bolstered public confidence in the electoral system, especially during recent electoral cycles, where efforts were made to enhance credibility and stakeholder engagement.

The farewell event, held in Monrovia, brought together members of the NEC Board of Commissioners (BoC), and Secretariat, as well as development partners.

They included representatives from UNDP, the European Union, the embassies of Sweden and Ireland, and the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD).

Both the outgoing ECOWAS Resident Representative, Madam Josephine Nkrumah, and UN Women outgoing Country Representative, Madam Comfort Lamptey, were presented plaques by the NEC BoC in recognition of their four-year service.

Meanwhile, as Liberia continues to consolidate its democratic processes, Madam Lansanah has recommitted NEC to uphold free, and transparent elections in line with international best practices.
