Following the April 23, 2025, election of Nimba County Electoral District #5 Representative, Samuel Gongben Kogar, authorities at the National Elections Commission (NEC) are again bracing themselves to conduct another by-election in the county.
This time, for a person to replace Kogar, who now becomes the county’s Senator.
The NEC, has meanwhile received an official notification from the House of Representatives (HoR) announcing a vacant seat in the 55th Legislature.
In its letter addressed to the Chairperson of NEC, Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, the House disclosed that the vacancy exists due to the election of Representative Samuel G. Kogar of Electoral District #5.
The House’ letter dated May 26, 2025, and signed by its Chief Clerk, Mildred N. Sayon, requested the NEC Chairperson to proceed as per her mandate, indicating that doing so constitutes her legal and sufficient authority.
Article 37 of the 1986 Constitution states: “In the event of a vacancy in the Legislature caused by death, resignation, expulsion or otherwise, the presiding officer shall within 30 days notify the elections commission thereof, the elections commission shall not later than 90 days thereafter, cause a by – election to be held; provided that where such vacancy occurs within 90 days prior to the holding of general elections, the filling of the vacancy shall await the holding of such general elections.”
In the main time, reports from the district said, at least five persons have declared their intentions to contest the upcoming by-election.
The names of Sampson Wonah, Augustus Menkoah, Kortor Kwagru, and Jessie K. Miamen, have surfaced as the leading contestants that are canvassing from hamlets to villages and towns cross the district.
