Nationwide Crackdown On Piracy Insight

The Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MOCI) and the Copyright Society of Liberia (COSOL), has announced a nationwide enforcement initiative aimed at combating piracy and encouraging compliance with copyright regulations among users of creative content, including music, arts, and films.

The initiative comes in response to alarming reports indicating that a significant number of businesses and individuals are operating without the required copyright clearances and licenses, as mandated by sections 9.6, 9.35, and 9.36 of the 2016 Intellectual Property Act.

” LIPO Deputy Director General for Copyright Clarence Cole said the launch of this initiative marks a significant step towards safeguarding the intellectual property rights of Liberian creators and reinforcing the nation’s commitment to upholding international intellectual property standards.

Making the disclosure on Punch FM in Monrovia on May, 13 2026 the Deupty Director General for Copyright at the Liberia Intellectual property office (LIPO) Clarence Cole said Director Cole disclosed that the enforcement is expected to begin on May 25, 2026 across the country.

The widespread and non-compliance not only violates Liberia’s General Business Laws and Intellectual Property Law but also jeopardizes the nation’s commitment to international trade rules and the sustainability of its creative and entertainment industries.

“The regulatory bodies is sending a clear message: full compliance is mandatory for all businesses utilizing creative content,” stated Mr, Cole.

“We will not tolerate any infringement that undermines the rights of content creators and the integrity of our cultural economy.”

As part of the enforcement strategy, LIPO and COSOL will conduct routine surveillance and inspection exercises to ensure adherence to copyright regulations.

The initiative targets a broad range of entities, including:

.Mobile Network Operators (MNOs)

. Centers of Hospitality (Hotels, Bars, Restaurants, Casinos, etc.)

.Traders, Wholesalers, and Retailers of music and movies

.Broadcasters (TV and Radio Stations)

.Importers of transmission, reception, and storage devices.

The enforcement campaign aims to educate stakeholders about the importance of respecting intellectual property rights and the legal implications of piracy.

It is also a call to action for creators and entrepreneurs within the creative sector to take proactive steps in securing their rights and obtaining the necessary licenses before commercializing their work.

“Copyright is crucial for protecting creative expression and ensuring that artists receive fair compensation for their work,” the representative added.

“We urge all creators to abide by the copyright office regulations to foster a thriving creative ecosystem .

As enforcement begins, all users of creative content are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the regulations and comply fully to avoid legal repercussions.
