The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) has successfully secured a groundbreaking agreement with the African Cultural Alliance of North America (ACANA) aimed at enhancing opportunities for young Liberian Athletes to showcase their talents on the international stage. The MYS release issued recently revealed that the deal between a prominent Liberian based in Pennsylvania, Vaffee Jabateh as head of ACANA, will provide opportunities for four to 10 local athletes under the ages of 18 years to participate in the prestigious “State Relay” beginning 2025.
Youth and Sports Minister J. Cole Bangalu said the collaboration with the organization is a major milestone for Liberia’s Sports Sector; adding; “It would create a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents across the world.” He pointed noted that this opportunity will not only create a chance to compete at an elite level, but also enable an invaluable experience in an environment that fosters growth, discipline and exposure to high standards of training and competition. Minister Bangalu explained that as part of the agreement, the Liberian Athletes will have their air tickets, accommodations, meals and ground transportation fully covered, stating that this is a comprehensive support package to ensure that the athletes can focus solely on their performances, unburdened by the financial and logistical challenges that often accompany international competition. The MYS statement further mentioned that Minister Bangalu’s efforts to secure a deal with ACANA reflects the ministry’s continued commitment to expanding the horizon of Liberian Sports. “State Relay” will have the opportunity to transform their careers competing in a top-tier event in the U.S. However, Bangalu added that it will also expose the youth to a new level of competition, which can accelerate their development and open doors to further opportunities, including scholarships and international training programs.
