Montserrado County District #3 Representative, Sumo Mulbah, has opposed calls by some of his colleagues for death penalty against drug traffickers and importers.
In a formal statement, Mulbah warned that such proposals violate international human rights standards, and could damage Liberia’s global image, especially as the country holds a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
He defended Liberia’s bounds with international treaties, including the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which banned capital punishment.
Rep. Mulbah, called for a three-part strategy to combat drug crimes: prevention and education, rehabilitation, and strong enforcement, backed by proper funding and international cooperation.
He called on fellow lawmakers to uphold the law, act responsibly, and avoid measures that could undermine country’s credibility or development goals.
Mulbah said life imprisonment and investment in drug control systems are more effective, and humane alternatives to the death penalty.
