First Lady Kartumu Y. Boakai, over the weekend visited the ongoing construction of the Lehleh Maternal Clinic in Totota District, Lower Bong County.
Mrs. Boakai visit, according to officials, was to strengthen maternal health system.
The inspection formed part of her hands-on approach to ensure quality delivery of maternal and newborn health services, particularly in underserved rural communities where access to care has remained a long-standing challenge.
For years, pregnant women in Lehleh and surrounding communities, have been forced to travel long distances to seek maternity services, often at great risk to their health and that of their unborn children.
The new clinic is expected to change that reality by bringing essential maternal care closer to the people who need it the most.
The Lehleh Maternal Clinic project falls under Mrs. Boakai’s continued national advocacy as maternal and newborn champion; a role in which she has spearheaded efforts to renovate, refurbish, and modernize health facilities across the country, with a special focus on maternal healthcare.
Construction officially commenced on February 4, 2026, following a contractor selection process overseen by the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC), which officials described as “transparent and competitive.”
The project is being jointly implemented by the Office of the First Lady in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
Once completed, the clinic will provide a wide range of maternal health services, including specialized triage units, a fully equipped outpatient department, and modern delivery suites furnished with contemporary obstetric equipment designed to improve safe childbirth outcomes.
During the site visit, Mrs. Boakai engaged local leaders and community members, reaffirming her commitment to ensure that women and newborns have access to quality, dignified healthcare.
The Lehleh Maternal Clinic is widely viewed as a major boost to healthcare delivery in Lower Bong County, and a significant stride toward strengthening maternal and newborn health infrastructure.
