The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has announced a comprehensive revision of public transport fares in Monrovia and the leeward counties.

The exercise aimed to strengthen public transportation system.

Officials describe it as a “transformative step” to a more efficient, fair and sustainable mobility framework.

The initiative, unveiled during a media engagement in the capital, reflects government’s broader commitment to modernize public services while balancing the needs of commuters and transport operators.

Transport Minister Sheriff Tyler said, the new fare structure is the result of careful consultations, technical assessments, and stakeholders’ engagement designed to improve the overall transport experience.

Mr. Tyler said, the revised fare system is not merely an adjustment in pricing, but a strategic reform intended to bring order, predictability, and fairness to public transportation.

“For years, commuters and drivers alike have operated within a loosely regulated system, often leading to inconsistencies in fare charges, disputes and inefficiencies. This initiative is about creating a system that works for everyone.

We are standardizing fares to eliminate confusion, ensure fairness, and support the sustainability of transport services across Monrovia and beyond,” Tyler said.

The reform covers major transport corridors within Monrovia and extends outward to surrounding communities and counties, ensuring that both urban and peri-urban commuters benefit from a unified fare structure.

The Ministry has assured the public that the new fares are carefully calibrated to remain affordable while reflecting the operational realities faced by transport providers.

The revised fare structure, according to Tyler, is designed to strike a balance by ensuring that operators earn a fair return on their services without overburdening passengers.
