Authorities at the Ministry of Transport (MoT) have officially launched, and embarked on the installation of over 26,000 high-quantity ‘Road Safety Signs’ in Monrovia, and its environs.

MoT is working in collaboration with the Liberia National Police (LNP), with support from the Road Safety Secretariat (RSS).

The installation of the signs is in line with government’s road safety measure, which is a critical component of public well-being, and economic development.

As such, the Ministry said, it is committed to make the roads safer for all users.

At the launch over the weekend in Monrovia, Transport Minister, Sirleaf R. Tyler, disclosed how the installation of the traffic signs will cover both urban and rural areas.

The initiative aligns with government commitment to transform the country transport sector.

Tyler termed the initiative as a major step towards the creation of a safer, and more orderly roads network in the country, especially in populated communities or streets.

He said the primary objective of the initiative is to provide a clear understanding to both motorists and pedestrians to always observe the traffic signs.

By that, it will reduce the number of road accidents, and ensure full compliance with road safety regulations.

Deputy Transport Minister for Land and Rail Transport, Rudolph G. Natt, Jr. said the Ministry

has been actively engaged with all stakeholders, working tirelessly to mitigate persistent road safety challenges.

He said the comprehensive road safety approach underscored government’s dedication to safeguard the lives of commuters, pedestrians, and all road users.

“These mitigation measures include infrastructure improvements, awareness as well as the provision and installation of essential safety signs along the roads.”

“Few months ago, the Ministry began the strapping of major streets in Monrovia, including Newport, Lynch, Carey and Broad Streets. Other areas are Camp Johnson Road and nearby communities.”

Natt said the scrapping of streets entails the removal of old, faded road markings follow by the application of new, highly visible lines, including center lines, dividers lane, and pedestrian crossing.

Accordingly, a clear and well-maintained road markings are fundamental for guiding drivers, thus preventing collisions, and ensuring orderly traffic flow, especially in urban areas where traffic density is higher.

Meanwhile, MoT in support of government’s broader public safety agenda recently procured, and brought into the country a huge quantity of road safety materials.

He said the installation of these traffic lights, and road safety materials are intended to improve communication, and awareness on the various road, as those signs will be placed at strategic locations along the road corridors.

Mr. Natt said the MoT remains committed in collaborating with the LNP to ensure the effective enforcement of all traffic laws, and regulations, as well as the protection of all road safety materials being installed.

The signs are to enhance better driver behavior, provide drivers with crucial information about potential danger and creased compliance with traffic regulations, thereby significantly reducing the risk of accidents.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has identified 65 locations in Montserrado County for the installation where citizens are expected to cooperate by adhering to traffic laws and respecting road safety infrastructure.
