The Ministry of Health (MoH) has launched a nationwide Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment program as part of the country’s broader effort to combat drug abuse.
SUD is a treatment programs for substance use disorder usually offers individual, group of family therapy sessions with focus on understanding the nature of addiction, becoming drug-free and preventing relapse.
This initiative is a key component of the national drug eradication strategy spearheaded by the Multisectoral Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse, established by President Joseph N. Boakai.
The program, in collaboration with the Mother of Light Rehabilitation Program (Oum el Nour Liberia), is designed to provide evidence-based treatment for individuals (Zogos) suffering from substance use disorders.
In its first phase, three outpatient centers have been established two in Montserrado County and one in Grand Bassa County along with an inpatient center in Grand Bassa.
Meanwhile, renovations are underway at the Youth Agricultural Training Center (YATC) in Bensonville, outside Monrovia, to convert the facility into Liberia’s second inpatient rehabilitation center.
A multidisciplinary team comprising psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, addiction specialists, educators, social workers, and vocational trainers will oversee the treatment process, a release said.
Beneficiaries will also receive vocational training in agriculture, tailoring and computer skills to support long-term recovery and social reintegration.
