Authorities at the Ministry of Education, through the Grand Kru County School System, have officially begun the construction of three new classrooms, and two administrative offices at the Sawken Elementary School in Electoral District #1, Grand Kru County.
The project comes after years of appeals from the school’s administration and community members, who repeatedly decried the dilapidated and unsafe condition of the existing structures.
For several academic years, the Sawken Public School operated under harsh conditions, with leaking roofs, and a lack of proper office facilities for administrators and teachers.
During the groundbreaking exercise, Grand Kru County Education Officer, Josiah Sloh Negba, confirmed that the initiative is part of government’s ongoing effort to improve learning environments across the country.
“This project is the result of US$10,000 allotment made to the school through the Legislative Adjustment. For too long, our children and teachers in Sawken have struggled in an environment that was not conducive for learning. We are grateful that this intervention is now underway.”
Mr. Negba said the new classrooms will reduce congestion, and provide a safer, more comfortable space for students.
He added: “The inclusion of two offices is intended to support better supervision, records management, and administrative efficiency.”
Negba expressed gratitude to lawmakers from the county for their support to the project.
“We want to extend our profound thanks to Senators Albert Tugbe Chie, Numene T.H. Bartekwa, for prioritizing education and ensuring that resources reach the schools that need them most.”
Residents of Sawken and surrounding towns, have welcomed the project. They noted it will lift a major burden off families, and improve students’ academic performance.
The Sawken Public School has played a crucial role in educating children, but its condition became unbearable due to lack of funding, thereby posing risks to both staff and students.
The construction work, which has already begun, is expected to significantly transform the learning atmosphere. Upon completion, the new facilities will hundreds of students, and contribute to the broader educational development goals of the county.
