Midwifery Curriculum Updated

By Domingo Dargbeh

The Liberian Board for Nursing, and Midwifery and the Ministry of Health Nursing and Midwifery Unit, have launched the updated competency-based pre-service education curriculum for registered midwives.

The exercise is to strengthen pre-service education and also tackles maternal death.

The updated curriculum development process, launched Wednesday, April 29, 2026, was funded by the French Government, with funding from the French Development Agency (AFD), and Technical Support from Expertise France to the Government of Liberia, covering 2026-2030.

The update curriculum was launched under the theme: “Strengthening Midwifery Quality Education for Safe Birth, Competence, Confidence and Compassion.”

It brought together government officials, international partners, midwives, healthcare providers and representatives from health institutions.

The updated Registered Midwifery Curriculum, is the result of an inclusive, evidence-based, and participatory process that reflects specific material and newborn health priorities, while aligning with International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) global standards.

It marks a significant milestone in Liberia’s commitment to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality, and advance universal health coverage, with the focus to improve the quality of midwifery education and strengthen the healthcare workforce.

The Curriculum has been fully revised to close the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical clinical skills, ensuring that graduating midwives are competent, confident, and ready to serve communities.
