Medical Research Initiative Launched By Godgift Harris

A high-level delegation of U.S.-based medical professionals from the Morehouse School of Medicine and the HEARTT Foundation have arrived in the country to kickstart a groundbreaking medical research and healthcare initiative.

The arrival of the delegation is a significant move to strengthen the country’s healthcare sector.

The initiative, which focuses on medical education, biomedical research and community-based healthcare services, is part of a broader effort to boost healthcare delivery and medical tourism in the country.

It marks a renewed collaboration between Liberia and its international partners to build sustainable and resilient health systems.

The visiting delegation is led by Dr. James Adama Sirleaf, Director; Mr. Matthew Wulukau, Jr., Co-Director, Dr. Leanne Burnham, Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine.

Other team members include Dr. Abdurahman Dwead, a postdoctoral researcher in surgery; Mr. Eddie Stanley, Translational Biospecimen Manager and Mr. John McGill, MBA, representing the HEARTT Foundation.

On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Ministry of Information press conference, Dr. Sirleaf underscored the team’s commitment to capacity building in the health sector.

“We are here to support healthcare education, provide training at John F. Kennedy Medical Center and engage in community health outreach across Monrovia and surrounding areas,” Dr. Sirleaf said.

The program includes active collaboration with local health institutions, particularly the JFK Medical Center and is expected to advance the country’s capacity in biomedical research while expanding services in hard-to-reach communities.

Mr. Wulukau expressed gratitude to the government for its hospitality and partnership.

He added: “We are honored to contribute to the wellbeing of the Liberian people through this joint effort.”
